The chemise is worn under all gowns, and bodice and skirts -- like a medieval slip. Chemises absorb the body's soils and leave less wear and tear on the outer garment which was usually more expensive. The chemise still does the same job today.
Ours are made from the same soft cotton muslin used to back baby quilts. This chemise with a drawstring neckline has very full and long sleeves with metallic trim sewn down the sleeves.
